So the latest CSO Figures are in and they make interesting reading for a marketer - at least those with a geekish predisposition to figures ( a.k.a. moi ). I was particularly interested in the figures for immigrant numbers. You see, I have just finished filming a piece for The Media Show on City Channel ( end of blatant plug ) on the emergence of new media to serve the ethnic communities.
When filming in the Polish newspaper Polska Gazetta we got into a discussion on exactly how many Poles there were in Ireland. Estimates varied in the room from 200,000 to one confident assertion that it was 500,000. While I thought the latter was a tad over-egged, I did feel the former figure could be right, as it's often been bandied about. So how many Poles are recorded in the census?
63,276 - a figure that's way lower than the estimates and one that may make media planners pause for thought, or at least sharpen their pens when negotiating rates with the papers serviing this market. And which immigrant group was largest - that's right UK citizens numbering 112,548. So shouldn't there be a 'Blighty in Dublin' daily? I forgot there is - it's called the Irish Daily Mail.
